Of what made it, I loved Luke Kennard’s smart, funny, also devastating Black Bag and Marlon James’ breathtaking, monumental The Disappearers but I think Rebecca Perry’s May We Feed The King might just win on the grounds of sheer, playful, airborne pleasure. TV-wise, I’m relishing Elizabeth Meriwether’s Furious on Disney – a good old fashioned female serial killer thriller in the vein of Black Widow elevated by quick, sharp writing and phenomenal performances, from both leads Lola Pettigrew and Emmy Rossum and their supporting cast of rich characters: Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Chloe Troast to name but a few. And I’m delighted by the return of podcast You Must Remember This with a new series called “The Bisexuals”, following the life of scandal-strewn singer Libby Holman. Easter holidays was a good excuse for a rainy cinema day and highly recommend The Drama from Kristoffer Borgli. Fun, unexpected and great performances from the two leads. The Moth Club’s Knock2bag comedy night is the perfect setting to see a variety of new and established performers - the last one I went to was hosted by the brilliant Freddie Meredith who I can’t wait to see again already. A wee specky Glasgow guy with good taste in books and music rather than football. He is supporting Kevin Bridges on his arena tour and that is a sign of things to come for CMB. Shout out to River City, Glasgow’s continuing drama came to an end this year. Jonny McKnight’s finale was a beautiful love letter to Shieldinch and the fans. Frank Gallagher’s Lenny stole the show and the good guys won in the end, as it should be. RIP to River City, Doctors and Holby City. The next generation of script editors and directors are going to have to cut their teeth somewhere. 30 Rock is my comfort watch at the moment. Tina Fey is a genius and makes the difficult look effortless. Speaking of comfort, shout out to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film, a lovely balance of jump scares and actual laugh out loud moments. It’s not a work of genius but it’s a lovely way to spend an evening. A tension-filled 95 minute film, what an actual treat. I don’t want to watch 2 and a half hour movies and 3 hours is taking the piss. It was an insightful and refreshing read that avoids the usual ‘time hacks’ and opts for more of a philosophical approach to time management. I’m currently in the thick of My Friends by Fredrik Backman, which I’m thoroughly enjoying. A beautifully observed story about the impact people can have on one another. To continue my non-fiction venture, next up is Moondust by Andrew Smith, which explores what happened to the men after they left the Moon, with Smith tracking down the surviving moonwalkers to see how looking back at Earth changed them. I’m listening to more podcasts than music as of late, Ill-advised by Bill Nighy has been a firm favourite. Bill Nighy acting as an accidental agony uncle makes for a great listen for the clumsy and awkward. I’m currently watching Youth and eagerly awaiting each new episode. I’ve also been enjoying The Gentlemenand am looking forward to getting stuck into The Blame.
